Installing Transmission on CentOS

Thought I would put up a quick guide to installing the popular bittorrent client on CentOS 5

Its a fairly simple proccess.

first off make sure your all up to date ‘su yum -y update’ you are going to need the add the rpmforge repo:

# rpm -Uhv http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/i386/rpmforge/RPMS/rpmforge-release-0.3.6-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm

# rpm -Uhv http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/x86_64/rpmforge/RPMS//rpmforge-release-0.3.6-1.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm

# yum check-update

# yum -y install libevent libevent-devel httpd php gcc make bzip2 gcc-c++ m4 make automake libtool gettext openssl-devel intltool libxml2 libxml2-devel curl curl-devel

# wget http://mirrors.m0k.org/transmission/files/transmission-2.01.tar.bz2
(note there may be a more up to date version at http://transmissionbt.com)

# bzip2 -d transmission-2.01.tar.bz2

# tar xfv transmission-2.01.tar

# ./configure -q && make -s

# make install

And thats is your done, to test it in your browser you can run:

# transmission-daemon

Now open a browser and goto http://<server>:9091

To stop transmission you can run:

# killall -HUP transmission-daemon

If anyone needs any help or spots a mistake etc, please leave a comment I will get right on it.
